In 1982, I started working in
old Northwest Portland houses as a remodeling contractor, doing carpentry,
electrical, plumbing and painting. Remodeling and restoring period
houses led me to wood floor refinishing projects, which
I embarked upon, unaware of how involved they might be. The work was
hard, but the results were dramatic and gratifying. Seeking the generous
advice of a third-generation floor man, I learned more and more about
the wood floor trade. Wood floor restoration became my focus as a tradesman
and businessman. I have really never looked back.
I have always felt
that restoring wood floors was akin to restoring antique furniture.
Hand brushing finish into a finely sanded floor is like hand rubbing
oil into a fine antique. The dry thirsty wood draws the finish in,
the color and grain come out, and the wood comes alive. It still gives
me delight. |
